Sierra Foothills Chapter, NSDAR, News

The NSDAR has three pillars of its mission, historical preservation, patriotism, and education of our youth. Our chapter strives to meet these goals through volunteer service to our community, our state, and our country.

September 17 thru 23, celebrates our governing document, the Constitution of the United States of America. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. On August 2, 1956, the resolution was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was later adopted by U.S. Congress. August 18, 2020, was the 100th anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The wording of the amendment stated that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This year we have a Constitution Week Display at our local public library to help in the public participation of this honor.

October 11 is the birthday of the DAR. Chapters are asked to celebrate by doing a service project. These projects vary by year. We have gathered dressy gowns and dresses for donation to military wives. We visited Cathey's Valley cemetery to mark GPS positions for the US military veterans buried there to make it easier for researchers and others to find the position of the grave in the cemetery. This information was uploaded to Findagrave.com.

Veterans Day, November 11 celebrates the Armistice; the ending of World War I (WWI). We honor all veterans of the U.S. military who served our country to protect the rights we take for granted each day. Every day our members thank veterans and would normally shake their hands as we meet them or see them in the community. We have a card to hand them thanking them for Each year we hold a number of Lineage Research Days. Check out our chapter Facebook page "Sierra Foothills Chapter - Daughters of the American Revolution" and the "Oakhurst California Community News" Facebook page for date and times.

So, after reading more about our chapter here in Oakhurst, and if you are a woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence you may be eligible to join the DAR. You must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage and death, as well as of the American Revolutionary War service of your Patriot ancestor. Our chapter registrar is here to help you get started. Your ancestor may have lived or served in the Northwest Territory or was a resident of the area that was held by Mexico, France, or Spain. Go to the NSDAR website and search for Forgotten Patriots to learn more about these men and women. You too may be eligible for membership in DAR.
